Canon FD 17mm f4 – EXCELLENT! Canon FD 17mm f4 – 1988 – EXCELLENT! An excellent example of this very rare vintage Canon ultrawide, compatible with FL, FD and many digital bodies! So rare as to be almost mythical, this amazing ultrawide lens is among the most sought after vintage Canon primes, offered here in simply amazing condition. Serial Number dates this lens to November 1988, making it one of the very last FD Lenses made before EF production took over. For that sort of investment, kit is expected to earn it’s keep, all the more amazing then that this lens survives in such amazing condition. I have never caught so much as a sniff of one before. The FD mount was introduced in 1971, succeeding the previous FL Mount. It was modified to the’New FD’ version seen here in 1980. FL and FD lenses and bodies are compatible, so this particular lens should mount on any camera which will take an FD or FL lens or for which there is and FD or FL adapter available, I have tried it on my own Olympus PEN F with great results, but equally it can also be mounted on the amazing full frame Sony A7 and A9, Sony NEX, Fuji X, Samsung NX and other mirrorless bodies with widely available adapters. This particular example of this legendary FD design survives in excellent condition for its 30 years. Optically, the vast front element bears no marks at all that I can see. Internally, there is absolutely no oil or fungus and holding it up to the daylight, there is no sign of any dust. The barrel has little to no wear at all and all markings are clear and present. Aperture control is from F4 to F22 and is as snappy and responsive as you could wish and clicks sweetly into each stop. Focusing is both smooth and well damped. I have had a very quick play with this lens on my current PEN F and it has performed every bit as well as you would hope, as with all the best vintage lenses, these early FD breech lock offerings have a beautiful design and a unique character which defies description, qualities which are only enhanced by the added mystique of the ultrawide. The lens is supplied as pictured, with Canon Caps, ready to get to work immediately! So there you have it, a very high quality and highly specced, must have vintage Canon ultrawide prime, which as you can see is in gorgeous condition and ready to get out and shoot! This really is one to grab while you can! I would love to keep it, but until I invest in an A9, it would just be hanging around, which would be sad, given the fact that it has obviously waited its entire life for the chance to properly prove itself.
